New Moon
New Moon
Silk Moths (bombyx mori), light bulb, wire, wood.
200 x 200cm
2000

New Moon presents 100 domestic silk moths suspended around a lightbulb. It is an impossible moment, historically the silk moth species used here has been 'farmed' starting in China over 3000 years ago. During this period of time the species has become extinct as a wild form but continued an evolution in its current habitat. Among other traits the larvae can no longer climb up surfaces and so can be kept in flat trays, the adult moth has lost all coloration appearing ghost like and also has become incapable of flight.
