Taylor made this work after returning from Mexico and encountering Frida Kahlo's final painting of the same name. Kahlo's works struck a chord with Taylor when he viewed them in the place of there making, and her use of animals as symbols and emotive 'things' had some resonance with his own depiction of them. Kahlo uses snails as motives often floating them in an image space.
Here Taylor plays on the sensual nature of colour, moisture, melons, touch and food, as well as contrary notions of desire, repulsion and lust and devouring.
